A sophisticated custom typeface and fun website for an award-winning photographer
Steph Martynuik is a Canadian commercial and editorial photographer. I designed her website, as well as custom lettering for a personal logo and some accompanying branded materials.
Steph’s work is bold, colorful and varied. Together we produced a delicate, sophisticated wordmark that could hold its own amid strong and impactful photography.
Typeface
I ended up designing Steph her own typeface from scratch. Most of the thin, ‘editorial’ typefaces that we found felt overly sartorial, outdated, and a bit ‘passion for fashion’-y.
Since we had already established that our display type would exist in all-caps, I had the opportunity to create a typeface in only uppercase–just in case it didn’t work out. But it worked out!
Website
Playing off the experience of scrolling through busy portfolio sites with laggy image loading, we identified each photoset by a color-coded ‘loading’ animation.
